Every podcast host celebrates downloads. I do, too. But lately, I’ve been asking a different question.
What happens after someone presses play?
Do they remember your message? Do they return for the next episode? Do they tell a colleague or friend about your show? Or does your voice disappear into the endless stream of content competing for attention?
The answers matter because downloads measure attention. Communities measure trust. And trust creates opportunity.
Those questions have been shaping my thinking as both a podcast host and someone who’s spent decades helping leaders become more visible, more trusted, and more influential.

Later this month, I’ll have the opportunity to share these ideas at the Empowered Podcasting Conference, August 21–23 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
For me, it’s a wonderful full-circle moment.
I attended the very first Empowered Podcasting Conference in 2023 because I sensed the organizers were creating something different: a community, not just another event. I came back the next year because the conversations were generous, practical, and refreshingly real. This year, stepping onto the main stage as a featured panelist feels less like arriving and more like continuing a conversation I’ve been having throughout my career.
Our panel is called “Beyond the Download: Creating a Loyal Podcast Community.” I can’t imagine a more timely topic.
Because this conversation isn’t all about podcasting. It’s about leadership. It’s about business. And, it’s about what makes people choose to come back.
Technology Changes. Human Nature Doesn’t.
I’ve spent my career exploring the intersection of public relations, executive visibility, storytelling, and emerging technology. Every new platform promises to change everything. AI is the latest, and perhaps the most transformative, example.
Today, AI is reshaping how people discover information, evaluate expertise, and decide who deserves their attention.
But one thing hasn’t changed. People still choose people they trust.
AI can recommend your content. It can’t create belonging. It can’t replace genuine conversations, shared experiences, or relationships built one interaction at a time.
The more technology evolves, the more valuable our humanity becomes.
That’s why community matters now more than ever.
From Audience to Community
Over the past several months, I’ve been exploring one question:
What transforms listeners into loyal advocates?
That question inspired me to develop a new community scorecard I’ll be introducing for the first time at Empowered Podcasting.
I’m keeping the complete framework under wraps until we take the stage, but I can share that it helps leaders, creators, and organizations explore three essential questions:
- What first attracts people to your voice?
- What gives them a reason to join the conversation?
- What inspires them to stay, contribute, and invite others?
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s awareness.
Because sometimes one thoughtful change creates more momentum than 12.4 new marketing tactics.
Increasingly, I’ve realized that visibility is only the invitation. Community is the destination.
And that’s where lasting influence begins.
Let’s Continue the Conversation in Charlotte
That’s exactly the conversation we’re bringing to Charlotte.
I’m excited to join my brilliant co-panelists—Christina Vidovich, Mark Lawley, and Sean McClellan—to explore practical ways podcast hosts can build communities that last long after the episode ends.
If you’ll be at the conference, I’d love to meet you. Please stop by after the session, introduce yourself, and let’s continue the conversation. Some of my favorite moments at conferences happen after I leave the stage.
If you’re still considering attending, I’d be delighted to see you there. You’re welcome to use my speaker discount code EPCBR15 for 15% off your registration.
Can’t Make It? I’ll Share the Framework.
If Charlotte isn’t on your calendar this year, I’d still love to stay connected.
Subscribe to my free Brighter Presence™ newsletter to begin applying my frameworks to your own podcast, business, or organization.
Because whether you’re growing a show, leading a company, or building a personal brand, the real opportunity isn’t collecting an audience.
It’s creating a community.
